Windy Weather
This week at the Channel Islands we battled weather fronts coming through the area, bringing a lot of windy weather. The windy weather made it a challenge to fish this week. We did have to cancel several trips because of the wind but the days we made it out on the water, we found great fishing.
Both the inner and outer islands had good days for those targeting Yellowtail. The inner islands however, was the place if you wanted to catch a White Seabass. A full day trip fishing at Santa Cruz Island, found a big school of Seabass that wanted to play. Biting both artificial and flylined live sardine, they were able to catch limits of White Seabass first thing in the morning.
Battle of the Sexes Fishing contest
At the outer islands, Santa Rosa Island specifically, we had an overnight trip in search of some big fish for the annual “battle of the sexes” charter between the “Gold Coast Lady Anglers” and the boys from the “Ventura County Fishing Club”. The ladies had won the past several years in a row, but this year the guys got it done, winning with a nice Yellowtail.
Fishing Variety in the Channel Islands
Overall, we had a great week. We have so much variety in the Channel Islands. Most of the action came early in the week because of the weather, but every day on the water was productive. Everything is biting right now, Barracuda, Yellowtail, White Seabass and of course the bottom fish, Lingcod and Rockfish. We are even seeing some Halibut in our counts as of late. The water is warming and all the other conditions are starting to improve. Its only a matter of time before we are running full speed. But for now we are in a holding patter until the weather mellows out. Several of our captains did say, “we are confident we’ll be able to get back on those fish as soon as the wind backs off”.
Fish Whoppers For the Week
Amanda Karpf from Camarillo caught a 28lb White Seabass on a full day trip aboard the Sea Jay at Santa Cruz Island, caught using a clear with red flake colored 4 inch swimbait and 1/2 ounce red lead-head*
Candi Morimune from Ventura caught a 25lb White Seabass on a full day trip aboard the Aloha Spirit at Santa Cruz Island, caught using a red and brown colored 5 inch swimbait and 3/4 ounce red lead-head*
Lisa Rizzo from Ventura caught a 30lb Yellowtail on an overnight trip aboard the Mirage at Santa Rosa Island, caught using a dropper loop rig and fresh frozen squid*
Rhanny Hufalar from Oxnard caught a 32lb Yellowtail on an overnight trip aboard the Mirage at Santa Rosa Island, caught using a dropper loop rig and fresh frozen squid*
Unknown Angler on a full day trip aboard the Cobra caught a 27lb Yellowtail atAnacapa Island, caught on a flyline rig with 1/8 oz sliding sinker and live sardine*
