Fish Report for Channel Islands Sportfishing for week ending June 18, 2017
This week, fishing continued to pick up around the Channel Islands and many would say because the weather finally chilled out. Little to no wind and warmer than average temperatures for almost every day this week. Our captains reporting sea surface temperatures in the upper 60’s as high as 68 degree, which was a huge jump from the previous week that saw sea surface temps in the low 60’s. With it, we saw more Yellowtail move into the area and White Seabass popping up in spots they had not been seen yet this season. Rumors of squid along the coast, specifically at Hueneme Canyon, is a pleasant surprise because finding live squid to use for bait has been extremely hard this season. Fortunately, the game fish we are catching are biting fin-bait like Sardine and Anchovy, or artificial lures like irons and plastics.

Other than that, no major changes from our previous weeks report. Fish are still biting at almost all the islands and for all trips, meaning you don’t have to go on an overnight trip to the outer islands to catch a big one. The early morning departures leaving at 4am and 5am are catching just as many White Seabass and Yellowtail. Bottom fishing is as solid as ever and a great backup plan if the game fish don’t bite. Many don’t understand what a huge saving grace this is, and what makes fishing this particular area so productive. Many fishing operations south of the Channel Islands and Ventura County, don’t have this as a backup which explains why so many come from long distances to fish here.

Richard Hill from Henderson NV, caught a 37lb Yellowtail on an overnight trip aboard the Mirage at Santa Rosa Island.
Scott Cohen from Los Angeles CA, caught a 25lb Yellowtail on an overnight trip aboard the Seabiscuit at Santa Rosa Island on a dropper loop with frozen squid
Salvador Villanova from Montclair CA, caught a 32lb Yellowtail on an overnight trip aboard the Pacific Islander at Santa Rosa Island.
Tony Mao caught a 39lb Halibut on an overnight trip aboard the Seabiscuit at San Miguel Island.
Orlando Pino caught a 28lb Halibut on a 2-day trip aboard the Ranger 85.
